In the shocking story of the death of Aaron’s sons because they brought unauthorized fire before the Lord, we hear the serious call of God upon the church to be a kingdom of priests, to uphold the Lord as holy, to distinguish between His ways and the ways of the world, to obey all of His commands, and to love the Lord above all others (Leviticus 10.1-11) February 4, 2024

After describing the sacrifices and ordaining the priests, the children of Israel gather at the tabernacle for their first corporate worship experience. And in that moment, the glory of the Lord appeared to all the people, and for the first time, Moses and Aaron walked into the tabernacle. This encounter, especially through the eyes of Aaron, bears witness to the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe (Leviticus 9) January 28, 2024.

As we continue to read Leviticus as our Guardian to lead us to faith in Christ, we consider the priesthood of the tabernacle and how it points to Jesus as the Perfect High Priest. Unlike the Levitical priests, Jesus was sinless and able to sympathize with our weakness, a glorious truth made possible through the incarnation. We see that even as we no longer need human priests to mediate our relationship with God, our need for a mediator is still there. The good news is that our Great High Priest fully and perfectly fulfills our need for a mediator. (January 21, 2024) Leviticus 8.22-24

Why should a new covenant Christian give their time and energy to reading, studying, and praying through the old covenant book of Leviticus? And if we do, how do we rightly handle this Scripture? As we introduce a sermon series on Leviticus called “The Guardian,” we try to answer these two questions. (Galatians 3.23-26) January 7, 2024.

The story arc of Scripture tells of God’s desire to dwell with His people, to walk among them, to be our God and for us to be His people. And each act in the story has left us longing for more, from the Garden to the Tabernacle to the Incarnation and even to the Indwelling Holy Spirit. In the final act, in the consummation of God’s plan, the vision given to John and recorded in the Book of Revelation gives us several images that give us the hope that each of those longings will be perfectly satisfied when God makes His eternal dwelling with us. The greatest miracle, the greatest mystery of all time is the incarnation, when God became flesh and dwelt among us. To comprehend this great miracle, we need to understand the beauty and greatness of who Jesus was and is, how He came to dwell on earth, but most importantly, why He came to dwell on earth. Our December sermon series is called “A Dwelling Place.” This month, we will be looking at the story arc of Scripture that demonstrates God’s desire to dwell with His people. This morning, we look at the backstory to understand more fully why there was a baby lying in a manger. God’s desire to dwell with us is prevented by the fact that sin indwells us. Why is sin such a major problem? (Romans 7.15-25) December 3, 2023.

As we come to the conclusion of a 14 week sermon series on Romans 8, we want to know the answer to the question that Romans 8 presents: how can we be “more than conquerors” in a world of suffering and groaning? What does it even mean to be “more than a conqueror”? (Romans 8.35-39) November 26, 2023.

In a post-Christian, secular world, we were promised to be set free from the oppressive notion of a divine being who revealed moral laws that we must obey. If this were true, humans should be set free from the pesky notion of guilt. But guilt strangely persists despite all of our efforts to get rid of it. The good news of the gospel is that the gospel defines the reason we feel guilty and provides a gracious solution. (Romans 8.33-34) November 19, 2023.

Romans 8 ends with the resounding gospel hope that we can be “more than conquerors” in a world where we are suffering and groaning, but how is this possible? The apostle Paul leads us to this conclusion through a series of questions, the answer to each is like a faith staircase leading to victory. This morning, we look at the first two steps: God is for us, and God’s love for us has been settled once and for all through the cross. (Romans 8.31-32) November 13, 2023.
