The Failure of the White Church

As hard as it is to confess, the white church in America has failed to embrace our black brothers and sisters in Christ as fellow citizens and members of the household of faith. Historically, we have built up the dividing wall of racism that Christ came to tear down. This morning, we try to do what Daniel did in his prayer, to confess the sins of our fathers. In doing so, we discover that racism is endemic to our sin nature, to have sympathy for the lasting impact of racism, to have a caring ear to the concerns of others, and to develop courage that the white church has historically lacked. The Gospel and Racism

Racism has been the dividing wall of hostility among humanity since the fall of mankind in the Garden. Josiah: Responding to the Word of God

King Josiah was perhaps the most righteous king since King David, and he walked in the ways of David, sharing David’s love for the Law of the Lord. And it was because Josiah’s heart was responsive to the Word of God that God blessed him. Through the story of Josiah, we are reminded that to neglect the Word of the Lord brings self-destruction, and that we need to handle the Word properly in order for it to transform our lives. Through this story, we learn that we cannot out sin God’s grace, that God’s mercy is creative and redemptive, that genuine repentance bears fruit, and that there is a great danger in delaying when God calls us to repentance.
