The reign of the evil king Ahab intersects with the great prophet Elijah. The question that confronts both Ahab and Elijah, and us today, is who or what has the power to give life to the dead and to bring something from nothing? Answering that question is even more difficult when we are forced to face the Jezebels of our lives. (1 Kings 16.30-33) June 16, 2019.

King Abijam is the classic story of a God follower in name only. Through his story, we see what Nominal Christianity really looks like so that our heart can be fully devoted to the Lord. (1 Kings 15.1-8) June 9, 2019

The story of King Jeroboam was written down for our instruction, as an example that we might not do what he did. Jeroboam wanted God's blessings but didn't want to walk in His ways. While we see that clearly in his life, we often the need the work of the Holy Spirit to see it in our own lives. (1 Kings 11-14) - June 2, 2019

Almost everyone agrees that forgiveness is a good thing, but the Cross re-shapes forgiveness for the followers of Jesus. How? As we read from Matthew 18, we learn that the cross re-shapes forgiveness in the following ways. (1) We are to forgive those who wrong us, (2) We are to forgive as Christ forgave us, (3) The cross calls us to respond to God's grace by giving grace, (4) The grace of the cross empowers forgiveness, (5) Forgiveness is not dependent upon repentance of the one who wronged us, (6) Forgiveness and reconciliation are not the same thing, (7) Forgiveness and reconciliation may require the help of others, and (8) Forgiveness is healing to the soul. (May 26, 2019) - Matthew 18.15-35.

Deuteronomy 4.9-10 teaches grandparents to make the faith known to their children and their grandchildren. The American experience of grandparenting has changed quite a bit over the last 100 years, but it is easy to lose sight of the disciple making call upon grandparents. (May 19, 2019).

The Cross reshapes marriage into a beautiful reflection of the harmony of the Kingdom of God. (Ephesians 5.22-33) May 12, 2019
As we read Ephesians 5, we learn...
Husbands and wives are to love each other the way Christ loves us.
Husbands and wives are to submit to each other out of reverence for Christ.
The cross reshapes our understanding of headship and authority.
Husbands and wives are members of the one body of Christ.
Like the cross, marriage can be painful at times.
Marriage should not be entered into unadvisedly or lightly.
Marriage declares the mystery of the cross.

Why is forgiveness so hard for God? Why can't He simply forgive us like Grandma does, out of His love for us? Why did Jesus HAVE to die on the cross in order for God to be able to forgive sinners? (Romans 5.6-11) April 14, 2019.
