By Sight and By Name

Monday Mar 18, 2024

While the empty tomb is the first reason why we should believe in the resurrection of Jesus Christ, it is not the only reason nor the best reason. Mary Magdalene, the first eyewitness of the empty tomb, was convinced that the body had been stolen by grave robbers until she met the resurrected glorified Jesus. But it wasn’t until Jesus called her by name that her eyes were fully opened to see and believe. Praise the Lord that Jesus continues to call sinners by name so that we can hear His voice, follow Him, and find life abundant and everlasting. (John 20.11-18) March 17, 2024

The historical, bodily resurrection of Jesus is essential to the Christian faith, but how do we know that it really happened? Why should we believe in the resurrection of Jesus? The apostle John wrote his gospel so that we could believe in Jesus as the Christ, the Son of God, and to have life in His name. How does the empty tomb give us reasons to believe in the resurrection of Jesus? (John 20.1-10) March 10, 2024

The Year of Jubilee, commanded by God in the book of Leviticus, was a year of rest for the land, for debts to be forgiven, for the land to return to its original order, and a call for God’s people to live in radical faith. Unfortunately, there is no evidence in biblical history that Israel ever observed the Year of Jubilee. Then why did God waste His revelatory breath to issue a command He knew would never be obeyed? The answer is that the Year of Jubilee is a Guardian to lead us to be justified by faith in Christ. In Christ, our sin debt is forgiven. In Christ, we are liberated from slavery. In Christ, we are called to live by faith. In Christ, we are looking forward to a Sabbath rest. And in Christ, we are looking for all of creation to return to the dominion of its original owner, God Himself. (Leviticus 25.1-12) March 3, 2024.

The Law of Liberty

Wednesday Feb 28, 2024

Wednesday Feb 28, 2024

The first half of Leviticus answers the question, “How can sinners draw near to the presence of a holy God?” The second half answers the question, “Now that God’s people have drawn near to His presence, how then shall they live?” While there are a wide range of laws in these chapters, there is one section from Leviticus 19 that remains crucial to the church today. Not only is this where Jesus quotes the second greatest commandment from, but this is also the basis for how the apostle James instructs the church to fulfill the law of liberty. (Leviticus 19.9-18) February 25, 2024.

How do we know that Jesus is the Christ the Guardian wanted us to find? We turn to Leviticus 16 and Hebrews 10 to see how Jesus is the once for all sacrifice that the Day of Atonement was pointing us towards and what we should be doing in response to that news. (Leviticus 16) February 18, 2024 - Preacher: Blake Theiss

We take for granted that we have been liberated from the dietary codes of the Law under the new covenant of grace, but we don’t often think about what that liberation means. By looking at the New Testament passages that teach our freedom from these laws, we see that our liberation from the dietary codes is meant to demonstrate that the nations are welcome at God’s table and that our cleanness in Christ produces a sanctified heart in genuine holiness. (Leviticus 11.44-47) February 11, 2024.

Unauthorized Fire

Thursday Feb 08, 2024

Thursday Feb 08, 2024

In the shocking story of the death of Aaron’s sons because they brought unauthorized fire before the Lord, we hear the serious call of God upon the church to be a kingdom of priests, to uphold the Lord as holy, to distinguish between His ways and the ways of the world, to obey all of His commands, and to love the Lord above all others (Leviticus 10.1-11) February 4, 2024

After describing the sacrifices and ordaining the priests, the children of Israel gather at the tabernacle for their first corporate worship experience. And in that moment, the glory of the Lord appeared to all the people, and for the first time, Moses and Aaron walked into the tabernacle. This encounter, especially through the eyes of Aaron, bears witness to the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe (Leviticus 9) January 28, 2024.

As we continue to read Leviticus as our Guardian to lead us to faith in Christ, we consider the priesthood of the tabernacle and how it points to Jesus as the Perfect High Priest. Unlike the Levitical priests, Jesus was sinless and able to sympathize with our weakness, a glorious truth made possible through the incarnation. We see that even as we no longer need human priests to mediate our relationship with God, our need for a mediator is still there. The good news is that our Great High Priest fully and perfectly fulfills our need for a mediator. (January 21, 2024) Leviticus 8.22-24

Why should a new covenant Christian give their time and energy to reading, studying, and praying through the old covenant book of Leviticus? And if we do, how do we rightly handle this Scripture? As we introduce a sermon series on Leviticus called “The Guardian,” we try to answer these two questions. (Galatians 3.23-26) January 7, 2024.
